GOTS – GLOBAL ORGANIC TEXTILE STANDARD
Sustainability from the field to the final textile product
GOTS-certified textiles consist of at least 70 percent certified organic fibres of plant or animal origin. The natural fibres should be grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and in accordance with the principles of organic farming. The standard also sets out strict social and ecological requirements for the entire supply chain. Human rights and environmental standards should also be taken into account.
Additives such as chemicals used or accessories like buttons or zippers can also be certified according to GOTS.
The chemicals used, such as dyes or textile auxiliaries, should
- be free from hazardous substances,
- contain no GMOs in their supply chain,
- contain no nanoparticles or microplastics,
- fulfill specific requirements regarding health and environmental hazards,
- have low acute and aquatic toxicity,
- be readily degradable.
The GOTS label on the final textile product ensures traceability along the entire supply chain, from the origin of the raw materials to the chemicals used to manufacture the product. The standard is updated every three years.
The GOTS requirements are reviewed on a regular basis through on-site audits conducted by an independent certification body. The Letter of Approval from the certification body serves as confirmation for GOTS-certified chemicals.
